Costa Rica Web Tour

Preparing for surf lessons

This will be our thirteenth season in Costa Rica, our six bungalows are exclusively for our guests. We are not a typical tourist location. So take sometime and read along and hopefully all your questions will be answered.

Arriving in San Jose you have three options: flying with Nature Air, Sansa, or our van service waiting for you outside the terminal. With these options the van service is the easiest and most “hassle free”. The photos below will familiarize you with the airport in San Jose.

If you choose Liberia as your destination of arrival, we will have a van waiting for your pickup. From Liberia it is a 2.5 hour drive to the school.  Keep in mind if you do your own air package make sure you consider our guide lines to getting you efficiently to the beach. There are limitations at different times of the year so please be flexible. We will get you to the beach as soon as possible.

Typical Day

A typical day starts with coffee, fresh fruits, your custom breakfast consisting of; eggs, bacon, pancakes, waffles, omelets, breakfast burritos are a favorite, french toast, or the Costa Rican choice; gallo pinto with corn tortillas. Whatever it is our cooks are ready to prepare it. You just order it.

Lessons are scheduled the evening before. If you want to sleep late not a problem just let Collin know of your desires. Lunch is buffet style served at 11:30 AM. After lunch we watch the film of everybody surfing. A tool any surfer can benefit from.

Students receiving their video critquesThe rest of the day is up to you. If you want more coaching in the water, we are always ready to surf. There are also plenty of outside activities to do: massages, yoga, kayaking, canopy tours/ziplining, surfing by boat, fishing, horseback riding, snorkeling (seasonal), ATV rental, and plenty of exploring to be had. We have two bicycles on-site for our guests to use and we are happy to assist you with any outside activity arrangements.

We serve bocas (hors d’oeuvres) at 6:30 PM and dinner is at 7:00 PM. The bar is always open because beer and juice are included in our package price.

Lessons

Our lessons are based on the fundamental skills of surfing; primarily paddling than standing up. The water knowledge you obtain with us is invaluable for your improvement. We teach the pure physics of surfing based on the slope drag theory. We have certain disciplines which we encourage you to follow. As you progress we have a variety of surfboards to offer ranging in length and shape.

Your private one on one lesson is scheduled the previous evening to ensure you and your instructor know when to appear in the morning. The instructors have a daily meeting to discuss each students needs for that day. Keep in mind we are here to work with you to improve. If you want a session with coaching in the middle of the day we will help you “just ask”. We film during the surf sessions and provide feedback at lunch. Bring a blank DVD, we like to send you home with your surfing footage.

In order to advance to the next level remember, surfing is a lifelong experience getting there is a process. We provide the knowledge to get you there. You determine the pace that you attain these goals. Coaching is as important than teaching skills, we are constantly coaching and watching. We hope the proceeding tour has given you a good idea of what our trip entails. Remember our staff is there to serve you. We are there to provide what you need. Any questions can be answered by contacting us.
