Costa Rica Web Tour

Preparing for surf lessons

Come along and take our web tour of this wonderful trip. We are in our tenth season and the dream of the perfect surf resort is completed. Our restaurant Fooney's has opened and is a great addition. We have our six bungalows exclusively for our trip guests. So take some time and read along and hopefully all your questions will be answered.

Begin your journey from your city of origin. Upon arrival in San Jose Immigration and Customs most of you will proceed to the Sansa (Regular scheduled airline)Terminal. When you leave the main terminal turn left and walk toward the main road. Turn left at the corner and proceed west to the Sansa terminal. These photos will familiarize you with the area.

Nature Air Terminal located in Pavos about a 25 minute taxi ride. If you are arriving in Liberia we will have a van waiting upon arrival for the 2.5 drive to the school.  Keep in mind if you do your own air package make sure you consider our guide lines to getting you efficiently to the beach. There are many limitations at different times of year so please be flexible. We will get you to the beach as soon as possible within our economic guidelines.

Typical Day
A typical day starts at 6:30AM with coffee, freshly cut fruit at the restaurant. Until 10:00AM you can order your custom breakfast, eggs, bacon, pancakes, waffles, omelet's, French toast, from one of our cooks.

Lessons begin at 8:00AM which are scheduled the evening before. If you want to sleep late not a problem just let Collin know of your desires. Lunch is buffet style served at 11:30AM after we watch the videotape from the days lessons.

The rest of the day until about 4:00PM is up to you. There are many activities for you: kayaking, horseback riding, snorkeling, massage, bike ride, ATV rental, ziplining, yoga, whatever. We will be happy to assist you with your outside activities. Keep in mind these activities are services of outside people and we do not have control of their screw ups. We generally schedule the afternoon free surf group lesson at 4:00PM. If you feel you need more than one private lesson a day just ask Collin and he will get you all the lessons you want.

We generally meet at about 6:00PM for bocas (hors d'oeuvres) the restaurant is open until 9:00PM so dinner is up to you. At 6:30 our traditional buffet style meal will be available for our guests. Feel free to order what you want off of our Mexican Restaurant menu. Juice and beer are included in our package price all other beverages are extra. Feel free to run a tab for the entire week for extra beverages.

Lessons
Our lessons are based on the fundamental skills of surfing; primarily, paddling and standing up. We teach the pure physics of surfing based on the slope drag theory. We have certain disciplines which we insist you follow. When you have received the lesson for all nine steps we will give you a sheet of the nine steps written down so you will remember them. Feel free to let us know if we are pushing you to hard to follow the disciplines. In particular, Rick can be a little bit of a sergeant surf, but we would rather push to hard than not enough.

Your private one on one lesson is scheduled the previous evening to insure you and your instructor know when to appear in the morning. The instructors have a daily meeting to discuss each students needs for that day. We also provide a group lesson in the afternoon before sunset. Keep in mind we are there to work with you to improve. If you want a session with some coaching in the middle of the day we will help you "just ask".

We videotape during the lesson sessions and provide play back at lunch. If you want to keep a video log of your week bring a VHS tape or you may purchase a DVD and we will duplicate it for you. The video is a huge tool for improvement and learning.

In order to advance to the next level. Remember learning or getting to the next level in surfing is a process. We provide the knowledge to get you there. You determine the pace that you attain these goals. Coaching is as important than teaching skills we are constantly coaching and advising. Once again if we are a bit intense for you just let us know and we will lighten up particularly Rick.

Students receiving their video critques
