Figuring the who, what, where, when and how of traveling during these crazy times can be challenging. So to help you prepare for your trip to Costa Rica, and ensure you meet the necessary entry requirements listed at the top of this page, we wanted to share some helpful resources.
Where to Get Tested for COVID-19 Near You
To enter Costa Rica, all visitors must take an RT-PCR diagnosis test, with a negative result (showing they do not have COVID-19). This test is also referred to as a PCR-RT COVID-19 test or just PCR test. It is described as a “molecular diagnostic test.”
Testing spots vary by location. Below are some ways to find where to get a PCR-RT test near you:
Click any of the above links to search for a testing spot near you. Or visit the U.S. Department of Health’s website for a state-by-state breakdown of available locations. Most testing sites are by appointment only. We recommend calling prior to visiting.
Please note, due to demand, some testing locations take longer than others to return results from your test. When calling for an appointment, be sure to ask how long it takes for that specific location.
In addition, some airlines are offering COVID-19 testing. Here is a list several airlines offering this service. If you are interested, we recommend first calling your airline to confirm they specifically provide RT-PCR testing results.
To enter Costa Rica, it is required that all visitors purchase travel insurance. This insurance must cover accommodations in the event of quarantine and medical expenses due to COVID-19.
Specifically, this travel insurance MUST cover:
There are two ways to get travel insurance:
We have done extensive research and we recommend going with option #1. Purchasing insurance through the Costa Rican provider is the easiest way to get a policy that covers the three conditions above. In fact, we have yet to find any other insurance provider that does so.
Insurance Via Costa Rican Provider
If purchasing insurance through a Costa Rican provider, you have two options:
If you arrive in Costa Rica without travel insurance that does not meet the three conditions, you will be required to buy an insurance policy on the spot from one of these two providers. However, we strongly advise purchasing the correct travel insurance prior to departure. Things can move astronomically slow at Costa Rican airports. There is a very strong likelihood you will be delayed, effecting transportation to the resort.
Insurance Via Other Providers
If wish, you can try to find the required insurance through an international provider. However, as we said we have yet to find any that cover the three required coverage conditions. As others arise we will update this page accordingly.
If are able to find a provider that meets the conditions you must request a certification from the company — issued in English or Spanish — verifying that the policy covers those conditions.
Airlines Currently Flying to Costa Rica
At this time, some airlines have limited availability or have stopped flights entirely to certain locations. For a list of the airlines who have resumed operations to Costa Rica please visit here.
Is it safe to surf during COVID-19?
As with anything it is important to practice precaution, but thanks to the uncrowded atmosphere of Nosara, and more specifically Playa Guiones (the beach where guests of our resort surf), everything is ideally suited for staying safe while surfing. In addition, according to Surfrider Foundation, there is still no information on the ability of the COVID-19 virus to remain viable in saltwater. Experts also agree the risk of COVID-19 transmission through water is very low. Everyone agrees that the best way to stay safe is to maintain proper physical distancing in and out of the water. Under normal circumstances our spot at Playa Guiones is ideal for beginner surfers, but it is especially well suited for adhering to Coronavirus safety protocols as it provides ample room to spread out and surf at safe distances from one another.
Are you open during COVID-19?
YES! Our surf resort is currently taking reservations and as of November 7, 2020 is open to guests.
Will I be able to return home?
Yes. If you are a U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident you can return to the United States from Costa Rica as normal. Upon arrival back in the United States you may undergo a routine screening procedure. For more information regarding your specific return destination, we recommend contacting your airline after booking your return flight. You can also find up-to-date travel information to and from the U.S. here.

We are firm believers that surfing has the power to heal and bring us closer together, even when we need to stay six feet apart. In the best of times and the worst, it comforts, rejuvenates, and invigorates. The world is facing a lot right now, but surfing can be a sanctuary and we want to share in it together with you.
Safety first is the motto of Corky Carroll’s Surf School, both in and out of the water. We want to ensure you can enjoy your trip to Nosara without concern. So our goal during these crazy times is two things: to stay safe and have fun. We’ll do our hardest to take care of the first and we’ll let the waves provide the second.
